After visiting Zaanse Schans, and getting a little bored of the tourist town, I headed to Alkmaar by train. I used the NS app to plan the trips and buy my train tickets. I was extremely easy and user friendly. I don’t think I paid anymore if I would have planned ahead and that way I had the freedom to travel as I liked. Because of instances like this I am glad I didn’t plan things out. Sometimes I wanted to leave early, sometimes I wanted to stay, and buying my ticket (minus the bigger ones from country to country aka with my luggage) day of was very convenient.
When: September 2019
I thought Alkmaar was beautiful and wonderful. I visited then sat at the beer museum, which was on a barge, for a long time. It was a nice relaxing time. One of the things I actually LOVED about The Netherlands, once I got used to it, was how SLOW the service was. At first I thought the waiter was a jerk but they just take a while to visit you and check on you. It’s kind of nice because it forces you to relax, take it all in, talk to people, eat slow, etc. When I went to Germany after I was like, “what do you want?!” when the waitress kept coming to me! The ability to relax and enjoy my time and my meal is something I will take forever from my time in The Netherlands.
