A lot has changed in my life lately, for the better! Okay well not actually “a lot” but it does feel substantial. First I deleted my Instagram account that had nearly 7K+ Instagram followers. Instagram was becoming a HUGE distraction. I felt like it was taking too much of my time in addition to providing very little benefit. I was sure I needed a lot of Instagram followers to grow my blog but when I looked at the statistics about 60% of my blog traffic is from Pinterest and 20% from Google. In fact less than 5% came from Instagram - I have NO idea why I was so busy focusing on a platform that wasn’t affecting my blog traffic.
Today I was feeling down and boredly started working on my blog and my mood improved. I forgot how much fun I have blogging. I love dreaming up content, taking photos, and writing blog posts! I want to start focusing on that instead of spending time on a platform that does nothing for my blog! I started my blog as a creative outlet when I was struggling to find balance in graduate school. Over the years my blog and what I blog about has changed a lot, as I have changed.
I felt as though my Instagram constrained me to one topic, outdoors and hiking. There is great advice out there to focus on one topic, find a niche as they call it so your readers know what to expect, but there are also great posts that recommend writing about multiple topics. I’ve gone back and forth on a niche but I have many interests and I hate feeling as though I can only focus on one thing. As I find myself again (I was a little lost last year!) my creativity has grown exponentially. I am starting to love fashion, opting for a minimalized chic look. I am decluttering my home, really sticking with minimalism… it’s so cheap and keeps your mind de-cluttered! I planted a garden and I am starting to explore old and new hobbies with friends. I strive to minimize my waste and eat clean. I’ve also started exercising more. Up until recently, I was lost and my blog suffered greatly. I talk about getting my creativity back here.
As I look to the future I am so excited. I have decreased screen time, filling moments with reading instead. I am taking pride in my clothes, using them as a creative expression. I am baking more and getting better a meal planning. Overall I am settling more into my every day life. I am trying to stop focusing on “shouId” and instead focus on the now. Instead of thinking about things I should be doing I am instead focusing and enjoying what I am doing in that moment. I plan to pick up my camera more and focus on every day life, throw the “niche” aside and instead focus on all part of my life. I am vast and I assume my readers are too! I want to spend more time with friends, living and learning, and sharing those experiences with you!
You may be wondering about my writing vs the accompanying photos. A while ago I found a post my Jess Dales where she wrote a story to accompany her photos instead of writing about the hike or vacation. I am aiming to do that, maybe go on a long weekend and write creatively about it but for now I am writing about things are important to me such as trying to live more in the moments. I never know what photos to stare with those posts and I don’t have much to say about some of my hikes so I thought I would combine to two!
My coworker and I hiked Lake Fork Trail a few weekends ago. We went about 7 miles total, her doggy starting to get tired. It was another beautiful hike in the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness… I just love the Beartooths! I’ve been trying to hike at least once a week and so far I’ve been able to keep up with this schedule! What are your summer plans?
